How Solar Energy Works

Solar energy is a renewable energy source that harnesses the power of the sun to generate electricity. Here’s a simplified overview of how solar energy works:
Solar Panels: Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, are comprised of silicon cells that convert sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. When sunlight hits the solar panels, the photons in the sunlight knock electrons loose from atoms in the silicon cells, creating an electric current.
Inverter: The electric current produced by the solar panels is in direct current (DC) form. An inverter is then used to convert this DC electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is the type of electricity used in homes and businesses.
Electrical System: The AC electricity generated by the solar panels is then sent to the electrical system of the building, where it can be used to power appliances, lights, and other electrical devices.
Net Metering: In grid-connected solar systems, any excess electricity generated by the solar panels can be fed back into the grid through a process called net metering. This allows the owner of the solar system to receive credits or compensation for the excess electricity produced.
